Welcome, Experienced Java Developer Bored by SL-275#

You're reading this page because, most likely, you're stuck attending a "Java Programming" course that is - for any of a variety of reasons - not really much use to you.

People use corporate training courses for many reasons, few of which have anything to do with actually learning something.

Training courses are used

  • as a tax- and training-budget deductible reward to developers - time off for good behaviour; a week of decent lunches (at least, this has usually been true for the training partners I have worked with) and not having to do too much. The developer's aim, in these cases, is to get out of class as early as possible every day (and no later than lunch on Friday!) and go to the beach on company time.
  • as an ass covering device: If a Project/Dev Manager can show a line-item that says "Developer Training" then that's one way for them to say "Not my fault" if/when a project slips behind schedule. "Must be those lazy developers..."
  • as a way to check the "social responsibility" checkbox on the Annual Report: "We spent over X zillion dollars training our staff this year..."

Here's How I Can Help#

First I'm going to assume that you're a developer who is actually interested in becoming more skilled, who does actually care about the quality of code and design, and who would like to learn more about being a better OO designer and Java developer.

If you're not, here's an exit...

OK, you're still here. Good.

There are two ways forward I would suggest: Persuade your manager to send you and your colleagues for some advanced Java training or advance your career by growing your OO design skills or learning more about PatternsOfOODesign in South Africa.

If you're outside South Africa, you're in luck: We can arrange package pricing for groups of 6 or more attending our courses in South Africa. It's cheaper than you think - we've had groups from Europe who attend courses in SA on the basis of price alone!

Escape the Northern Winter for a week or two and enhance your development skils at the same time!
